Other tasks

Line handling, splicing wire and rope, and demonstrating marlinspike seamanship skills. They may also stage large amounts of equipment, such as twist-locks, braces, ratchet-straps, and tie-down rods.

Safety

Observing marine conditions and passengers to ensure safety during ferry operation or special events. They may also help secure the ship for sea and report any sightings or dangers to the watch keeping team.

Cargo operations

Assisting with loading and unloading cargo.

Navigation

Assisting with navigation by standing lookout and steering. They may also work with bridge equipment.

Maintenance

General maintenance and housekeeping, including cleaning, painting, and chipping rust. They may also maintain the ship's structure, ensuring there are no cracks or chips.
